She jerked back from him. “I don’t expect you to take care of me,” she retorted, obviously not thrilled with his remark.

He reached for her. “I’m sorry; that was rude.”

She shoved away his hands. “You can’t keep saying whatever is on your mind and then just say you’re sorry. That was rude. If you think I’m such a tramp, why are you even interested?”

“I don’t think that. I’m just accustomed to saying what I’m thinking at the second I’m thinking it. But I really didn’t mean it. I don’t think you’re a tramp. If I thought that, would I ask you to move in with me?”

“I don’t know. I’m so confused.” She dropped her head into her hands again. “I just don’t want to make any more mistakes.”

He put his hand under her chin and lifted her head. “Am I a mistake?”

“You are probably the only thing in my life that hasn’t been a mistake.”

A note from the author:

We live in a world where few people find their happily ever after, even though most of our childhood stories preached that to us. Wait a minute. Did they? I keep hearing…and I’ve been known to write this statement, “I’ve obviously read too many fairytales…” But when I looked back, the fairytales weren’t all sunshine and roses. In fact, many of the characters in what we tag as ‘fairytales’ were beaten, banished, orphaned, poisoned, lost, and on and on…

So where does the fairytale aspect actually play out? Is it when the dashing prince on the white stallion sweeps in and they live happily ever after? Chuh! But hey, the protagonist had to go through many trials to get there. So what’s so bad about that? Personally, I don’t think there’s a problem, except for putting all your dreams in one knight in shining armor who turns out to be a frog. But you can still work at your happily ever after, with or without the prince, right? Though, in my opinion, I think we’re all looking for someone who completes us.

The fact of the matter is a troubled past helps us appreciate a wonderful present. When we experience trials, we often seek out God and loved ones for support and are that much more thankful when the trial ends. So, I don’t have trouble with fairytales; that’s why I write them, modern-day fairytales, that is. I put my characters through trials and tribulations because I know that somewhere, someone can relate. Yes, there’s normally a knight in hidden-armor, who usually requires some polishing before he’s fit to be a prince. But again, isn’t that what great relationships do? They feed off each other to become better partners.

This is what I write about in all my stories. People who have flaws, but learn to overcome, trust when all else fails so they can love again, and forgive so they can know peace.

In Entangled Dreams, I tackle these and many other issues head on. So, for my version of a modern-day fairytale, read on for how to get your FREE copy!

Happy reading,

Six months earlier

Seattle, Washington

His first taste for killing happened when he was eight. On a visit to his grandparents’ farm, he’d snared a rabbit in a trap he’d built himself. He’d taken out his trusty Swiss Army knife then and there and slit its throat right before he’d skinned it.

But that had been twenty years ago. Since then he’d graduated to bigger and better rabbits. He chuckled at his own joke as he made another pass on foot, past the house where the blonde lived who he’d been spying on for the better part of a week.

He’d already been inside her townhouse. He knew her name was Carrie Bennington and that she lived alone, except for the occasional men she brought home for pleasure and companionship, always on the weekends. He smiled. Carrie didn’t have to worry too much longer about whether she would be alone or not, or how she spent her time, or how dedicated she was at her job as an administrative assistant.

Because the clock ticked and the Grim Reaper waited for Carrie like a long lost friend, or maybe it was a nice friendly labradoodle. Either way, he’d picked Carrie after she’d caught his eye at the marketplace and he’d followed her home. That had been a week ago last Saturday. He’d waited until that Monday morning after she’d left for work before he’d picked the lock on her sliding glass door and slipped inside. That had been the first time, the neighbors none the wiser. So much for the neighborhood watch program.

Because he was good at climbing, athletic and lean, he didn’t let things like a two-story apartment building dissuade him from getting at his quarry, not if he really wanted to get inside. He’d been a long distance runner in high school and still kept in shape. But even so, he liked to keep it simple. He preferred it when his victims had the good sense to own their own homes. Like Carrie who lived in a stylish two-story townhouse with an undersized courtyard.

He’d spent hours there going through her closets, her dresser drawers, even her refrigerator. He’d used her bathroom. After all, when the urge to take a dump hit a guy, he had to go.

Every day this week he’d spent some time in Carrie’s home. He’d watched. He’d waited. That’s how he knew what time she left for work each morning, what time she unlocked her front door every evening, and where she picked up men during happy hour on Friday and Saturday nights.

He knew she kept a vibrator in her nightstand, the one on the left hand side of the bed. He knew which store she’d purchased her last pair of underwear from.

It excited him that he could come and go as he liked. He touched the ring he carried inside the pocket of his hoodie, the ring he’d taken from her jewelry box, some dime-store trinket he’d known when he took it that she’d never miss. The ring kept him focused, had for a week. Not that he needed incentive or purpose to think of what he wanted to do to Carrie. But the ring was a reminder that he could come and go in her things, get inside the place where she should’ve been the safest whenever he needed or wanted.

Standing under the light from a street lamp, he watched as Carrie’s bedroom light went out right on schedule. Ten-thirty. He shook his head. One thing about Carrie, she was dependable.  He walked to the end of the block, sliding into the shadows of the alley behind her co-op. When he reached the six-foot fence, he took the time to stretch on a pair of gloves. He had help vaulting over the barrier by using crates he’d had the forethought to stack along the alleyway beforehand.

In the backyard, he took out his penlight. He went over to the little outdoor shed Carrie used as a greenhouse, found the metal pipe he’d spotted there a week earlier. He hefted the weight onto his shoulder and stepped to the sliding glass door. He didn’t need the tool to break the glass. Only amateurs made too much noise. And he was no novice at B&E or killing. No, he had another use in mind for the heavy rod. From the inside of his pocket, he took out his mask, pulled it down over his head. He pulled out his picklock and went to work on the door he’d already breached once before.

Inside the living room, he scanned the area using the beam of light. Even though he had familiarized himself with the location of the sofa, the coffee table, the bookcase—which wall held the flat-screen television, which side of the room had the fireplace—he still took his time until his eyes adjusted. But knowing the layout made it easier for him to make his way to the staircase in short order. He managed to avoid the steps that creaked along the way up and kept to the path that allowed him the art of surprise.

When he stepped into Carrie Bennington’s bedroom and stood over her sleeping form, he paused long enough to appreciate her golden hair, her soft skin, her long neck. By the time he placed his hand over her mouth it was too late. He thrilled at the terror he saw reflected in her green eyes. Not only that, but it excited him to know his face would be the last one she’d ever see.

Vickie is the author of six novels, including The Evil Trilogy and the Pelican Pointe series. She’s a hardcore lover of books who grew up listening to her mother tell fascinating stories about ghosts and other tales full of characters she wasn’t sure ever really existed.

A self-proclaimed beachgoer and ocean-lover, she lives in Southern California with the love of her life. When she isn’t working on her next manuscript or screenplay, she loves to be outdoors.

In her spare time she tries to grow things which other people commonly refer to as gardening. She loves reading all kinds of books, both fiction and non-fiction, loves to play video games, and enjoys watching football with the hubby. If you’ve ever read any of her books, you know she’s a die-hard Raider fan, which means she has the patience of Job.

She lives for chocolate, but then who doesn’t? She’ll kill for a cup of coffee in the morning. She’s convinced the best food on earth is French fries. And she could easily be a vegetarian if it wasn’t for bacon.

“Tears of Endurance” – A secret can tear you apart or bind you forever… #NewRelease

Tears of Endurance

I am honored and chuffed (I’m not British, but I LOVE that word, so I just had to use it) to feature the new romantic/drama written by D.G. Torrens, and making its debut today,

A secret can tear you apart … or bind you forever.

Ben Fielding slowly opened his weary eyes, only to be greeted by the all too familiar vice-like grip in the front of his head. Enveloped in pain, he pressed the buzzer to attract the nurse’s attention. Twenty minutes later, the pain had subsided with the help of two strong painkillers provided by the young nurse who attended to his call. Today was the day he finally got to go home. He never thought this day would actually arrive. The nurse informed him the doctor would be around to see him within the hour and then he would be discharged, all being well. Two painful, long months he’d endured at the Westview Hospital and, as fantastic and supportive as the nurses and doctors had been, he was very eager to see the back of the place and get back to some semblance of normality.

He missed the privacy his apartment ensured and, more importantly, his faithful Golden Retriever Charlie, who was being looked after by his reluctant and altogether grumpy neighbour. The simple things he once took for granted prior to the accident were the things he was most looking forward to rediscovering on his return home; especially taking Charlie for a walk along the river banks. He knew Charlie was going to enjoy more of the great outdoors over the coming months more than being stuck in Ben’s office. As he worked such long hours, he was fortunate enough to be able to take Charlie to work with him. As chief engineer and a recent partner to the firm, Ben was blessed with certain privileges not afforded to many in the firm, and that included his own large city view office and a permanent corner for Charlie, which was a must as far as he was concerned. He used to take him out every lunch time for a good walk, and for some much-needed thinking time for himself.

Ben couldn’t remember anything about his first few weeks in hospital following his near fatal accident at work. As chief engineer for an international building company, he spent a lot of time on site making sure everything was going to plan and following the progress of his current projects. The scaffolding was not secure on the day of his fall and he was standing near the top of the construction when it collapsed. He awakened in hospital a few weeks later. He had broken bones all over his body and his head had taken a severe blow. The surgeon operated immediately as an MRI scan showed pressure was building up in his brain. His condition would have been fatal had it been left untreated any longer. He was put into a drug-induced coma for one month because the pain would have been far too much for him to endure. He’d also sustained massive trauma to his back, neck and ribs, plus a collapsed lung. The reason he was still alive today was that the scaffolding had twice slowed his fall.

After almost four weeks, he was slowly and carefully brought out of his coma with relative ease. On waking up, all he could feel was incredible pain running through every part of his 6-foot frame. He was plied with pain-relieving drugs and sedated. The first month after he’d awakened was hell on earth and he couldn’t imagine ever being pain free again. Every inch of his body felt like it had been pierced by a sharp sword. His surgeon advised him that his pain would ease over time but he would need to take his medication daily to ease his recovery and make him feel more comfortable.

While he was in a coma, Ben suffered the most horrendous nightmares. On waking, it took some time for his brain to adjust to the fact that they were not real events that had occurred in his life and nor were they harboured memories. This was a side effect of the drug, not a pleasant one at all. Some days he still felt so confused, so unsure of what was real and what wasn’t real.

Thankfully he had the best private medical healthcare money could buy. His company had taken care of everything following his accident. His personal secretary Lisa had arranged for his neighbour to take care of Charlie while she looked after his apartment, popping in to pick up the mail and generally keeping it clean for his eventual return.

Ben’s only regular visitors were his brother Tristan, his loyal secretary Lisa, who had been a rock since the accident, and the partners of the firm. He felt intense paroxysms of pain in his head most days and the scar stretched from one side of his head to the other, but the doctors advised him it would not be seen once his hair grew back. He was just thankful to be alive, grateful to the doctors for saving his life. His was a loyal firm and informed him they were not expecting him back for at least six months or so. Ben was nowhere near ready to go back to work so he welcomed the leave. He felt a desperate need to start living again.

While Ben was waiting for the doctor, he cleared out his bedside table and packed his bag. His thoughts drifted to Dena, perplexed at her refusal to visit him. They had been dating for a few months prior to his accident and he thought it was going somewhere. It came as a complete surprise to him when Lisa told him that she would not be visiting him and decided that she was not ready for a serious relationship after all. This made no sense to him; only a few weeks before his accident, she was hinting to take their relationship further, wanting them to move in together, and urging him to consider the possibility. When he needed her the most, she had deserted him; he was simply discarded like a broken ornament that no longer served a purpose.

Ben made a mental note to himself to speak with his secretary more about this so he could make sense of it all. He needed to know exactly what Dena had said to her and he wanted to know why she’d turned her back on him during his most vulnerable time, no matter how painful it would be to hear the words. He was on his own now, and he knew his long-term recovery would be slow. The doctor advised him it would be many months before the pain in his head subsided. He had to be cautious and give his body time to heal completely. “No climbing mountains for the time being!” his doctor had teased…

Lisa had arranged for a car to collect Ben as soon as she received his call that he had been officially discharged. Ben turned and looked over his shoulder, taking one last look at the hospital that had been his home for two months. A sense of relief washed over him as he climbed into the car. He sat silent and in quiet contemplation on his journey home, the stabbing pain in his head palpable and unwavering. He eagerly fumbled for the pills in his jacket pocket and swallowed a painkiller to ease the persistent pain. Thoughts of his life prior to the accident ran through his mind. The missed opportunities in his personal life over the years, the friends he’d lost along the way, all for his career. Why? he thought as he glanced out of the car window. It was at that moment that he realised now just how fragile life really was.
